NEV-DC Honor's Banquet 2005

Nevisian Association Of Washington DC Honor Mr. Loughton Sargeant At Honor’s Banquet.

Excellent, awesome, tremendous these are some of the words that many of the guests at the inaugural Nevisian Association of Washington DC (Nev-DC) used to describe the event.

The function surpassed all of our expectations and I must say thanks to all the Nev-DC members who work hard to make it an excellent evening. Special thanks must go out to Shauna our hardworking treasurer, Stocky for handling the plaque for Sarg, Rico for handling the tickets, flyers, banner and raffle, Sarg for the music and working with me, Dereka for the presentation to Sarg, Jasmine for the vote of thanks, Gilly for the address, George our camera man and for all the others who made a special effort to sell
tickets.

The guests arrival was a pleasant feature like a miniature Hollywood red carpet with the, "who is who" of the Nevisian community. The many successful business men, professionals, medical doctors, PhDs, engineers and lawyers made us proud to be Nevisian. But the special arrival moment was when the Premier Hon. Vance Amory graced us with his presence.

The program started with the invocation from Nev-DC member Rico Clarke and then Everton Powell a.k.a Obi, president of Nev-DC, set a relax mood with his introductory remarks which was at time punctured by applause from the receptive audience.

Then while the guests partake of their dinner Dr. Gilbert Daniel who was the keynote speaker imparted some words of wisdom and motivation to the audience. Dr. Gilbert Daniel who is the brother of NRP candidate Mr. Hensley Daniel is a young medical doctor who graduated from Howard University. He spoke on the topic "Bridging the gap" which stresses the importance of working together as Nevisians and by extension Black people and also to give back to our community. He called on Nevisians abroad to always remember to give back to Nevis in whatever way possible.

Then came a special part of the night when Nevisian Mr. Loughton Sargeant a.k.a Sarg was honored by Nev-DC for his tremendous contributions to the development of Caribbean Culture in the DC metropolitan area. Loughton is a founding member of the D.C. Caribbean Carnival, Inc., and served as its first Treasurer from 1993- 1999. Loughton took over the helm as Executive Director in 1999 and continues to serve in this capacity. Under his leadership, the DC Caribbean Carnival has grown to one of the largest and most successful annual community event in Washington, D.C. and this is no small feat considering the massive community functions held in DC through
out the year.

The complimentary raffle prize of a free weekend for 2 at the Canile Bay Resort in the US Virgin Islands was won by one of the New York guests, Mavis Guishard who was so elated that she danced all night with her winning prize in her hand. Congrats Mavis.

The Premier then followed with a few words in his capacity as premier (he wasn't slated to give a speech but many guests demanded that he share some words with the audience).

Then came the dancing and partying; the Image Band which is own by Sarg started the dancing off right with some sweet Soca music. BQE which is led by Cory Tyson from Gingerland Nevis, then continued the positive vibes which saw the dance floor packed and the trains and Congo-lines were flowing all over the ball room floor. Man, if the Premier, Hilary “Doc” Guishard and Dr. Everson Hull were all getting down on the dance floor, that should indicate that the vibes and the music had to be sweet. Well of course yours truly never let good music waste so I was doing my part too.

The night ended on a very high note a little after 1 am with people wanting more. All in all it was a very successful function and we are hoping to repeat this success next year so mark it on your calendar.

Thanks again to all who came out and gave us their support.
